It hasn't changed, but I think that saying it's slow is misleading. It's slow in the sense that it takes a long time before you have a club with strippers and sex workers and are making more money than you know what to do with. But there's plenty to do leading up to that, once you get past the first month or so which can be a bit slow because there's not too many characters yet.
Two possible explanations I can think of:
You need to copy the folder runtime\save_files from your previous version.
To be able to hire somebody you must have room in your club. Not only the post itself but general room for them. Each locker room allows for only some employees. After that you cannot hire anymore unless you build another locker room. Look for this line in the club info:
What points do you mean? The score points behind the cup symbol are just some measure of how well you're doing and actually completely irrelevant to the game.
It starts as only bar management but city laws become more and more relaxed as the game goes on and in the end you can indeed have sex workers.
Attraction is calculated from what a character likes and dislikes and what characteristics the other character has. There is no absolute value for it, and it cannot be set directly. You can set the likes and dislikes individually.
